Tips on Caring for Your Rug After Cleaning

– Vacuum Often

Rugs must be vacuumed regularly to remove grit as it will wear down the fibres over time. It is advisable to vacuum in the direction of the pile and be careful not to vacuum fringes as they may get caught in the rotating brushes or sucked up into the vacuum and become damaged.

– Deep Grit Removal

Find a good quality vacuum cleaner with a brush action then vacuum the front and back of the rug. Dirt will sometimes collect underneath the rug over time and work its way into the base of the fibres. When you vacuum the back of the rug, this loosens up this particular dirt. Make sure that the floor surface is clean and dry before placing your rug back down.

– Rotate your Rugs

If your rug is in a high-traffic area or sitting under a table, be aware that the fibres will wear down over time if feet are placed onto certain parts of the rug consistently. If you can rotate it often, this can avoid worn spots appearing. If your rug is expensive, then these tread marks may take some of the value from your investment.

– Quality Rug Underlay

A good quality specialty rug underlay will provide a protective layer between the floor and your rug. This will increase the life of the rug and help to keep it in place. It is important to make sure that your underlay is the same size as your rug. This will help to keep the rug from rubbing on the flooring beneath, as this may wear down the backing.

– Spills & Accidents

If you spill something or the dog has decided not to go outside and used your rug, firstly absorb as much of the liquid as you can with a paper towel, making sure you do not use a towel with colour as the colour may transfer onto your rug. Blot and DO NOT RUB as this may damage the fibres permanently. Do not use any household detergents or spotters, this will cause more harm than good. These are sometimes aggressive oxidizers that can permanently discolour the dyes in the rug.

– Prevention of Sun Fading

As we all know the Australian sun can fade the most durable fabrics and carpets. If you have placed your rug within proximity of a window, be mindful to close the curtains or blinds to prevent sun damage. Most dyed rugs and especially those after the first time washed will fade over a long period, Persian rugs, in particular.
